scraps logoNothing says “Independence Day” like sunshine, fireworks and barbecues. However it’s a time when many pets become “independent” from their owners, particularly cats.

To help spark interest for cats that came in over the last few weeks, SCRAPS will be having an “Independence from Shelter Life” Adoption Sale between July 13th and July 31st.  All adoption fees on cats and kittens here at SCRAPS will be waived when new adopters pay the cost of the license – $15.   All adoptions include spaying/neutering, microchip, exam, and first vaccinations.

“Nearly sixty-two percent of dog owners will come into SCRAPS to get their dog when it goes missing,” said Nancy Hill, Regional Director of SCRAPS.  “They also license and microchip their dogs, but not their cats.”

SCRAPS is open seven days a week:  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Wednesday the shelter is open from noon to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. SCRAPS is located at 6815 E. Trent in the Spokane Valley.

*While dogs are commonly the focus of animals who get lost during the Fourth of July, SCRAPS deals with far more cats. Here are some numbers:
Of the 220 animals brought into SCRAPS since July 4th – 134 cats, 86 dogs
Of those animals, here are the redemption statistics – 46 dogs, 4 cats
SCRAPS average of cats redeemed by the owners – 4%
National average for cat redemption by owners – 2%
