Shoplifters cost Spokane Valley business up to $1000

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash — Shoplifting can put a dent in the bottom line for big box stores and can be devastating for smaller businesses. Spokane Bins, a family-owned small business in Spokane Valley, told NonStop Local they have had several shoplifting incidents in the span of a week and a half, costing them around $1000.

Michelle Miller, the co-owner and manager of Spokane Bins, said the loss would significantly impact them: “$1000 a week is a kind of money that puts us out of business.”

Miller told NonStop Local that the incident was caught on their security footage and she has filed a crime check report. She added that there will be changes in the future, “we’re ramping up our security measures. We’re going to have somebody at the door checking our receipts because $1000 every week and a half is enough to justify paying someone to make sure someone isn’t stealing.”

Miller said she wonders if those who she believes stole from her know the impact their decisions have on her family, “It’s disheartening and it’s sad to actually watch people stealing, because there seems to be a disconnect between their actions and how it actually impacts people.”
