WALLACE, Idaho – The Shoshone County Jail is holding 17 inmates over maximum capacity and expects to fail its annual Idaho Sheriff’s Association inspection for the second time in two years.

The jail expects to fail the inspection again on April 2.
“Last year, we were over capacity 83.5 [percent] of the time, so we lost our certification. Considering we are overpopulated every day, we will fail the inspection,” the Shoshone County Jail said.
If Shoshone County fails the inspection again, it could mean a more expensive insurance plan for the facility according to the Sheriff’s Department. As of April 1, the county jail is housing 65 people. The capacity of the facility is 48 inmates.
It is not currently clear whether the county is planning on expanding the maximum capacity of the jail.
