Spokane City Council approves $250,000 settlement with family of man killed by police

SPOKANE, Wash. – City Council voted 4 to 3 to approve a settlement with the family of a man shot to death by Spokane Police Department (SPD) officers in 2022 Monday night.

The police shooting on Jan. 24, 2022 transpired while Kamo appeared to be holding his two-year-old nephew and a knife. Police body camera footage released by the department in Oct. 2022 shows the moments leading up to Kamo’s death.

The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office declined to bring charges against Corporal Brandon Lynch and Officer Corrigan Mohondro for firing upon Kamo in Nov. 2022. Prosecutors said that the deadly use of force was necessary given that he was holding an infant at the time.

It is not the first time the City of Spokane has settled with the family of someone killed by SPD. In 2007, Trent Yohe’s family was awarded $50,000 in a similar settlement case in order for the city to avoid legal liability.

Now that the city council has settled the matter, Kamo’s family will receive a $250,000 sum in exchange for ceasing further litigation with the municipal government and police department.
