SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County’s flu vaccination rates are lower than desired, with only 26.7% of residents receiving their updated flu vaccines last year, according to the Washington State Department of Health.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services aims for 70% vaccination coverage among individuals over six months old. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over six months receive the vaccine, with few exceptions. Certain groups, including those over 50, individuals with obesity, Native Americans, immunocompromised individuals, and people who are or plan to become pregnant during flu season, are strongly encouraged to prioritize vaccination due to their higher risk of complications.
“They’re at higher risk for complications, particularly the under 5, and particularly the under 2 years. It’s essential,” said Cindy Roberts Hollon, an advanced registered nurse practitioner and certified pediatric nurse practitioner at MultiCare.
This fall, MultiCare is offering two Saturday youth clinics for existing patients to accommodate those with busy weekday schedules. The clinics will be held on Oct. 5 and Nov. 2, and appointments are encouraged.
For those who are scared of needles, a flu mist option is available for people over the age of two who qualify.
