SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) and Spokane County Fire District 9 responded to several fires last week during the record-setting heat.
According to SFD, on July 18 around 5:30 p.m., firefighters received multiple calls about a house fire in the area of North Majorie Street in the Pacific Park neighborhood. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large garage fire at a three-story home. The fire had also spread to a car parked in the driveway.
Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes and buildings and managed to rescue the family’s dog. Although they were able to contain the blaze, the garage and its contents were lost, and there was smoke damage inside the home. Damage estimates total $150,000, but firefighters saved property valued at over $350,000. The fire is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
SFD later responded to another fire on July 22 around 5 p.m. in the area of East Desmet Avenue, where smoke was reported visible from the back of a home. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and confirmed a fire at the rear of the house.
Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control with no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damages, but firefighters saved property worth over $220,000. The American Red Cross was called to assist four adults and one child with housing.
Additionally, firefighters tackled and extinguished a brush fire near South Southeast Boulevard and East 31st Avenue, as well as another near South Ivory Street and East Pacific Avenue. Investigations are ongoing for both fires, which are deemed suspicious.
Firefighters also responded to a brush fire this morning near Ferraro’s Restaurant in the 3000 block of North Division, also under investigation as a suspicious fire.
