Spokane firefighters rescue unconscious dog after pipe incident

SPOKANE, Wash. – Members of the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) rescued a dog they found unconscious after chewing on a pipe.

On Wednesday, May 29, an engine from the SFD was dispatched to East Queen Avenue for a reported overdose. According to Spokane firefighters, they encountered a woman holding a tiny, three-pound, nine-month-old Chihuahua.

Firefighters noticed that the dog was distressed and sluggish. The owner informed the SFD that she had found the dog chewing on a pipe in her backyard, and since then, it had been difficult to rouse and keep awake.

Firefighters treated the dog for an overdose after observing slow breathing, pinpoint pupils and lethargy. They administered a small dose of Narcan and contacted an emergency veterinarian.

According to SFD, veterinarians quickly administered several doses to the dog, who promptly became more alert and showed purposeful movement, much to the owner’s relief.

As this is the second canine narcotic overdose that the Spokane Fire Department has handled in the last two weeks, we would like to remind parents of both children and furry animals to ensure they monitor what goes into their little loved ones’ mouths.
