SPOKANE, Wash. – Do you have a building you’re willing to donate for fire training? Spokane firefighters are seeking residents willing to contribute structures to be used for hands-on training exercises.
According to the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), while most training takes place at the department’s academy, firefighters also rely on “destructive training” in real-world structures to develop critical skills.
These sessions allow firefighters to practice tactics and techniques in environments that mimic real-life emergencies. Destructive training can include cutting holes in roofs and walls, breaking down doors and windows, searching for simulated victims, deploying fire hoses, and flowing water. In some cases, live fire exercises are conducted.
The SFD says property owners can donate buildings that have reached the end of their usable life and are slated for demolition, provided certain conditions are met. To qualify, buildings must:
– Be located within Spokane city limits.
– Be structurally sound (free from significant fire damage, rot, or risk of collapse).
– Be free of unmitigated biohazards, such as feces, needles, or rodent infestations.
Donating a structure can help firefighters prepare for emergency calls and other services. The SFD notes that donors may be eligible for a tax deduction, though they recommend consulting a tax attorney or accountant for advice, as they cannot provide tax guidance.
