Spokane launches first-ever youth skateboarding lessons this June

SPOKANE, Wash. – The city of Spokane always offers youth lessons for various activities, including basketball, martial arts, swimming, flag football, and more.

Now, for the first time ever, the city will teach your kids how to skateboard.

It starts with the fundamentals like how to stand, balance, and fall. Then, your kids might be able to pick up a few tricks.

Lessons are 4-weeks long, from June 1-29 (no class on June 22). You can sign up for lessons from 9-10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The deadline to sign up is May 30 and you can click here to sign up.

Here is some Q & A with the course instructor, Jay Olsen:

Why should people skate? Skateboarding is not only great exercise but also teaches resilience and a sense of community.

Who can skate? Everyone! I have friends from all walks of life—young, old, deaf, blind (yes, blind)—one of my best friends has no feet and skates every day.

How do you help someone who is afraid? Start small. Spend time on your board on the grass or on the carpet. Wearing safety gear really helps with confidence.

What are the most common mistakes beginners make? There really is no wrong way to skateboard. What we are teaching are good foundational tips that kids can grow from.

What advice do you have for beginners? Spend as much time as you can on your board. Stand on it and move it around. Board time is essential to feeling comfortable.

What should you wear? Beginners should always wear a helmet. Knee and elbow pads are great, as well as wrist guards. When you fall, your instinct is to put your hands down, and that’s a great way to twist your wrist.

What are the details of the classes you are teaching with the city (time, date, location, deadline, where to sign up, etc.)? Our lessons will be at Dwight Merkel Sports Complex or Joe Albi Park in Spokane. We are holding them every Sunday in June and hoping for more sessions if we get enough sign-ups. The deadline for June sessions is May 30. If you want to sign up click here!
