Spokane man accused of murder appears in court

SPOKANE, Wash.- Caleb Hulings, an 18-year-old Spokane resident who is accused of 1st degree murder, appeared in Spokane County Superior Court on Feb. 27.

According to court documents, police initially responded to a suspicious death complaint on April 26, 2023, and found a deceased man who had been stabbed several times and had a pendant stuck in his back.

The death was initially categorized as a suicide, but the Medical Examiner recategorized the death to a homicide.

Pictures found on Huling’s social media page by detectives reportedly show him wearing the same pendant which was stuck in the victim’s back.

Law enforcement connected the event to a domestic violence complaint which took place on April 25, the day before the body was found, in which a family member of Huling’s was arrested for assaulting him with a knife. Law enforcement says this took place after the victim was allegedly killed by Caleb Hulings that day.

Information obtained from the family member’s social media messages shows that on May 25 they sent voice chats requesting help from another individual.

In the communications which appear in the court documentation, the family member says that Huling killed someone who had molested him as a child.

“I need help out now…I saw [Huling] murder. I was there…[The victim] was a pedo and [Huling] took me there and I witnessed this,” the family member said.

The investigating officer argues that analysis of blood spatter and samples from the scene and surveillance footage which collected a record of Hulings’ movements over the course of April 26 create probable cause to charge Hulings with 1st degree murder.
