Spokane man arrested after attempted carjacking near county court

SPOKANE, Wash. — A 29-year-old man is in custody following an attempted carjacking near the county court building in Spokane.

According to court documents, Thomas Merten was fleeing from Spokane police when he approached a woman driving away from the courthouse at the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and North Monroe Street. He allegedly asked her for a ride and attempted to open the car door before reaching through the window when she refused.

The victim was able to escape unharmed, and Merten was later apprehended by Spokane police nearby. He now faces charges related to the incident.
