AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – A Spokane man was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting his girlfriend at Northern Quest Resort and Casino.

According to court documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office – Eastern District of Washington, the incident occurred in May 2024. The suspect, Edward Kensler, 45 who is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, violently attacked his girlfriend, causing severe injuries.

Documents state Kensler grabbed the victim by the back of her head and threw her on the ground with such force that it displaced two couches and a table. He then chased her through the resort, continuing his assault by attempting to stomp on her face, punching, slapping, and hitting her with his knee.

Kalispel Tribal Police Officers arrested Kensler in the resort parking lot and provided aid to the victim. Officers noted the victim’s face was swollen and she had multiple scrapes.

“Mr. Kensler violently and repeatedly assaulted his victim, causing her severe injuries. Furthermore, Mr. Kensler had a history of domestic violence offenses and was on federal supervised release at the time of this latest assault,” said U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref.

On Oct. 23, a district judge sentenced Kensler to 60 months in prison. Judge Rice also imposed three years of supervised release. Additionally, due to his violation of federal supervised release, Judge Rice imposed an 18-month consecutive penalty.
