SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown announced a new executive order to promote safe roads and streets following the death of Janet Mann who was hit and killed in downtown Spokane.

Brown signed the executive order providing details on her and the city’s plan to promote safe driving and protect walkers, bikers, and transit users in Spokane.

Janet Mann who was influential in Spokane’s history was tragically killed in a hit-and-run on North Browne Street and West Main. Gary Burns was arrested after his truck was seen hitting and running over Mann on surveillance cameras and then driving away according to police.

The Spokane Police were directed to place more automated traffic cameras in high collision intersections and high-speed areas.

The executive order will also address infrastructure within neighborhoods by adding double the mobile speed feedback program units in the next two years.

Mobile feedback programs collect data on the speeds in the area and show drivers how fast they are going.

Brown also promised to review the lighting in the city that would help keep walkers and bikers visible to drivers.

She also touched on the new transportation commission that was recently put in place. The new commission team will be responsible for reviewing policies and projects to improve traffic safety.

“Everyone has the right to get to work, school and their homes safely. We have the ability to proactively address safety risks that are built into the transportation system,” Brown said.
