SPOKANE, Wash.- Senator Maria Cantwell (D) joined Mayor Lisa Brown and a group of regional housing leaders to support increased federal support for low-income housing.

Cantwell, who touted the U.S. House’s passage of a tax package which would expand the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program, pitched the policy to Spokane voters by describing its if it passes the U.S. Senate.

“We will build over 200,000 new units nationwide in the next two years, and we will build 7,000 additional units, [in addition] to the 10,000 we would normally build here in Washington state over the next two years,” Cantwell said.

Brown offered additional support of the package, which she stated will meet a critical need for additional housing across the Lilac City.

“It increases affordable housing supply, new construction and the rehabilitation of existing housing,” Brown said.

The event took place at Mother Teresa Haven, a Catholic Charities property which received 70% of its funding from the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program according to Cantwell’s office.

The tax package awaits a final vote in the Senate before potentially being sent to the president’s desk.
