SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown is taking a new approach to address the city’s shelter needs. After closing the TRAC shelter, Brown described it as financially unsustainable, calling it a “money pit” and criticizing its warehouse model.
As winter approaches, Brown faced criticism for shutting down the shelter. However, she is now focusing on expanding behavioral resources and implementing a scattered site model. This new strategy includes partnerships with churches and nonprofits.
Brown emphasized the importance of collaboration in her plan. “Cooperation between the city, county, law enforcement, and behavioral health and addiction experts is critical to success,” she said.
The mayor’s plan aims to provide more effective support and resources for those in need, ensuring a stronger network of care across Spokane.
