SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane police safely arrested a suspect after he barricaded himself in an apartment complex on Francis Avenue a few blocks west of Arlington Elementary School Monday evening.
Police arrived at the apartment after two residents called 911 to report a neighbor was threatening them with a knife.
Early on in the standoff, police confirmed they had been in contact with the suspect and that mental health specialists were responding, however hours passed with little movement.
One of the neighbors who reported the threats said the man waved a butcher knife at her.
“Within moments he came down with a 12-inch chefs butcher knife and he wheeled it at me, and he said I am going to murder you,” neighbor Richelle Goettel said. “(He) started stabbing and I started to walk back and then he said you all get out of here because I’m going to murder you all.”
Police have not identified the suspect but did say he would be booked into the Spokane County Jail and face second-degree assault charges.
