SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane police arrested a man after he allegedly stole a water bottle and brandished a machete when confronted by a community member.
According to the Spokane Police Department (SPD), on June 18, around 8:30 a.m., officers responded to the area of 1500 E Illinois Avenue following a 911 call reporting that Kyle M. Bowen had threatened someone with a machete.
Police stated that the incident began when a community member confronted Bowen for stealing a water bottle. Bowen then allegedly pulled out a machete in response to the confrontation before fleeing on foot.
Witnesses reported that Bowen raised the machete in a threatening manner before leaving the scene. The community member pursued Bowen, who stopped and again displayed the machete while making threats.
SPD officers quickly arrived at the scene, located Bowen, and detained him without incident. The machete was found on the ground nearby.
Following an investigation, police established probable cause to arrest Bowen for First Degree Robbery. He was subsequently booked into Spokane County Jail, where he remains in custody. Bowen also faces charges of Second Degree Assault. Police noted Bowen’s extensive criminal history, including prior felony convictions for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
