Spokane police investigate death of newborn infant

SPOKANE Wash. — Spokane police are investigating the death of a newborn infant that could have been the result of a blow to the head with a hammer.

A search warrant filed on Tuesday described the accounts of officers who responded to the Olson Apartment Complex on West 9th Ave. on Nov. 6, as well as the account of a witness.

Investigators described a circular bruise on the child’s head that appeared similar to the shape of the head of a hammer found near the body.

Police identified mother as the person who had contact with the infant most recently, however she was not at the apartment when they arrived and hadn’t been contacted by law enforcement by the time a judge signed the search warrant.

The Spokane County Jail Roster showed she was in custody on Tuesday evening on an unrelated fugitive charge.

NonStop Local KHQ won’t identify the woman unless charges are filed. We have reached out to police for more information, and we will update as details become available.
