SPOKANE, Wash. — A man who stumbled in an intersection Saturday morning in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood strangled a woman who tried to help him, according to police.

In a release, a Spokane Police Department spokesperson said the incident happened at the intersection of Napa Street and Trent Avenue.

According to police, a woman saw a man stumble across the roadway. When she asked if he needed help, he told her he needed water.

Another driver gave her a water bottle to hand to the man.

Police said that the man then ran into a concrete wall and fell to the ground. When the woman again offered help, the man “pulled her to the ground and began strangling her.”

The other driver pulled the man off, though police said the man continued to pursue the woman.

The woman was able to drive off and stop away from the scene where the driver who helped her joined her. Officers saw injuries on the woman’s neck that appeared to show she had been strangled.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man and booked him in the Spokane County Jail. He appeared before a judge who set his bond at $5,000.
