SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane police surrounded an apartment complex on Francis Avenue a few blocks west of Arlington Elementary School Monday evening after residents reported a neighbor was threatening them with a knife.
Police were still engaged in a standoff with a man who barricaded himself in an apartment as of 7 p.m.
According to police, two people called 911 to report the suspect had threatened them.
Police had no estimate on when the incident may resolve, however they confirmed they had been in contact with the suspect and that mental health specialists were responding.
One of the neighbors who reported the threats said the man waved a butcher knife at her.
“Within moments he came down with a 12-inch chefs butcher knife and he wheeled it at me, and he said I am going to murder you,” neighbor Richelle Goettel said. “(He) started stabbing and I started to walk back and then he said you all get out of here because I’m going to murder you all.”
Police have not identified the man barricaded in the apartment, nor have they confirmed if he will face charges if he is detained.
