SPOKANE, Wash. – As New Year’s Eve approaches, Spokane police and rideshare drivers are urging partygoers to plan for a safe ride home to avoid alcohol-related crashes.

Kevin Dukelow, a Spokane rideshare driver for the past seven years, recalled the frenzy of driving on New Year’s Eve last year. “Oh, it was just ride after ride after ride,” he said. Dukelow emphasized the busy nature of the night, adding, “I did it two years ago and I made more money than I could comprehend. It’s going to be really busy for whoever does it.”

Spokane Police Traffic Sergeant Teresa Fuller echoed Dukelow’s sentiments, stressing the importance of not driving under the influence. “Yeah, I’m hoping it doesn’t bring out any rowdy driving. We all hope that everybody behaves themselves and does the right thing on New Year’s Eve,” said Fuller. She advised those planning to drink to either stay home or ensure they secure a rideshare ride.

Fuller noted that relying on a designated driver isn’t always the best option and recommended using rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft. Other transportation options include Spokane Transit and local taxi cabs. “Get a safe ride home that way, rather than pick the least intoxicated of their friends to drive,” she said.

The Washington State Patrol reported a 33-year high in traffic deaths in 2023, with 400 fatalities involving drugs or alcohol. Fuller emphasized the dangers of drunk driving, stating, “We’re also trying to keep our law enforcement officers safe in what can be a very dangerous and deadly holiday sometimes for people.”

Dukelow reiterated his commitment to passenger safety, saying, “Maybe I’ll pick up some day drinkers and I’ll take them home safely.”

Fuller advised those who must drive on New Year’s Eve to slow down, wear seatbelts, and drive defensively.
