Spokane sales tax increase saves many city jobs, cuts three

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two months ago, 29 Spokane city employees faced potential job cuts as the city worked to balance the 2025-2026 budget.

By the end of the year, only three positions were eliminated. These included a civilian planner in the police department, an IT employee, and a civilian network administrator in the fire department, according to city spokeswoman Erin Hut.

Mayor Lisa Brown credited the voter-approved sales tax increase in November for saving many of these jobs. In an interview with the Spokesman, she emphasized the impact of the tax approval on maintaining city employment levels.
