SPOKANE, Wash – A 16-year-old Spokane girl is recovering after being hit by a car in the West Central neighborhood.

The hit-and-run occurred on December 3 around 7:40 p.m. in front of Bongs Grocery and Deli on West Boone.

Avrey, the victim, was walking across West Boone when the car struck her.

She described the car as moving so fast that she didn’t see it coming.

“I was terrified. The worst part was going to the hospital and seeing how bad it really was,” said Avrey’s mother, Melody.

Melody recounted that Avrey had just helped a dog back into its fence before crossing the street. In an instant, Avrey was hit. Nearby people rushed to help her.

“If it wasn’t for the employees at Bongs, my daughter wouldn’t be living,” Melody said.

Avrey was on her way home when the accident occurred. Melody was waiting for her daughter when she saw the police and learned it was Avrey who had been hit.

“I still can’t believe it,” she stated.

Avrey sustained serious injuries, including a skull fracture, fractured pelvis, and a broken finger.

“Her right ear – she doesn’t hear anything out of it. She might have to have a hearing aid, and she walks with a walker now,” Melody explained.

Due to insurance limitations, Avrey’s hospital stay was cut short.

Surveillance video captured the car that hit Avrey.

Melody expressed her urgency in finding the driver.

“I really need this person off the streets. If he does this again, he’s going to kill somebody. He just left my daughter out there, to die,” she said.

The Spokane Police Department is investigating the incident. Melody said Monday that it’s her mission to find the person responsible.

“Yes, I’ll do anything. If it was somebody else’s child I would help them too,” she added.

Melody emphasized her determination to find the driver.

“You can run, but you can’t hide. We’re going to find you, and when we do, you better just turn yourself in before the police or other people get to you.”
