AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — The Spokane Tribe of Indians released a statement expressing condolences and offering support following a fatal car crash on Highway 2 that left a teen dead and two others in critical condition.
“The Spokane Tribe of Indians wishes to express its sincere condolences and prayers to the families, friends, and loved ones impacted by the traffic accident earlier this week involving our Tribal youth,” the statement read. “Accidents like these are tragic and affect all of our communities.
“Our cultural, traditional, and religious teachings will aid our communities as we work through this difficult time. The Tribe is also offering counseling to help those during this time of need.
“We would like to express our gratitude for the outpouring of support from local tribes, schools, and surrounding communities.”
, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP). Officials said a 16-year-old boy from Wellpinit died in the hospital following the crash. The driver and another passenger remain hospitalized in critical condition.
WSP said that the car, driven by an 18-year-old girl from Fruitland, was traveling on Wood Road when it failed to stop at a stop sign before entering U.S. Highway 2. The car drove underneath a westbound semi-truck and became lodged under the vehicle.
The passengers included a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy, both from Wellpinit. WSP said the driver was a family friend of the passengers.
Following the death of the 16-year-old boy, the Wellpinit School District released a message to students and families.
“It is with deep sadness that I inform you of a tragic event involving several of our students, who were involved in a serious incident this morning. Our hearts go out to our families, friends, and community members,” said John Adkins, superintendent of the Wellpinit School District.
“We understand that this news may be difficult for many students, staff, and families. Counselors and support staff are and will be available to offer assistance and guidance during this challenging time. Please feel free to reach out if you or your child need support,” Adkins added.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
