SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane Valley medical supply company must now pay over $200,000 to resolve healthcare fraud allegations.
Justin Leland has agreed to pay $224,620 to resolve allegations of billing Medicare for unnecessary durable medical equipment.
The durable medical equipment includes items like oxygen tanks or wheelchairs, which Medicare supplies to patients if ordered by a physician.
In 2018, Leland registered US Professional Medical Supply LLC (USPMS) with the Washington Secretary of State and obtained a National Provider Identifier, listing himself as the owner.
In September 2019, Leland submitted around 400 billing claims to Medicare from USPMS, listing himself as the provider. Medicare paid a total of $112,310 for the claims Leland submitted.
An investigation by the Washington Department of Justice found that some patients never saw providers and were given equipment they didn’t need.
“This settlement puts durable medical equipment suppliers on notice that they will be held accountable if they attempt to defraud the United States,” said Vanessa Waldref, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.
