SPOKANE, Wash. – The Downriver Park access area near the TJ Meenach Bridge will reopen on Wednesday after closing in September 2022.

The area was closed due to the Cochran Basin Stormwater Treatment Facilities project. The city of Spokane explained the purpose of the work on Tuesday.

“This project [will]…reduce the amount of contaminants that will reach the Spokane River from over 5,000 acres,” the city said.

To celebrate the reopening of the area the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments will hold an event on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Beloved fish Ribby the Redband Trout will be in attendance. Ribby is an advocate for trout populations in the Spokane River and frequently attends civic events pertaining to water health in Spokane.

Rafting groups and municipal staff will also be represented.
