Spokane’s General Store fills the need for last minute school shoppers

SPOKANE, Wash. — Cassie Montgomery thought she was just wandering into the General Store for a water bottle; she left with a collection of odds and ends to prepare her new 6th grader for the upcoming school year.

Most Washington school districts, including Spokane Public Schools and Mead School District, start class Tuesday.

“We’ve been working up to tomorrow a little bit,” Montgomery said. “She did a little bit of shopping already at those other places. And plus, I like the General Store.”

The pair didn’t put too much thought into a possible Labor Day rush. They didn’t need to — the store checked off all their needs with a minimal crowd.

Not the best way to teach your kids about the punishments of procrastination.

“I think maybe not everybody comes to the General Store for school shopping,” Montgomery said.

The store opened in 1946 and has been a Spokane Staple for decades. Staff placed notebooks, pens and other basic essentials at the front of the store near checkout for convenience.
