SPOKANE, Wash. – St. John’s Cathedral, a significant landmark in the Spokane community, is a popular venue for holiday choir concerts.

The cathedral, designed in a 16th-century Gothic style, is approaching its 100th anniversary in Spokane.

Senior Priest Heather Van Deventer shared insights about the cathedral’s appeal. “It feels very traditional,” she said, noting that this traditional feel attracts many music groups throughout the year.

The holiday season, particularly Christmas, is a special time at St. John’s. “We’ve also been having our musical groups practicing,” Van Deventer said, highlighting the cathedral’s festive atmosphere. “And have had special musical offerings each week as we mark and walk our way,” she added.

St. John’s Cathedral emphasizes inclusivity and equality, especially during the holiday season. “That’s part of why all are welcome here; you don’t have to come in your Sunday best. You don’t have to have a Sunday best, just that open heart,” Van Deventer stated.

She believes faith can support those facing challenges, “from the highest highs to the lowest lows.” The core Christmas message at St. John’s is about finding love within oneself. “And love your neighbor as yourself, which also means you have to love yourself,” Van Deventer emphasized.

The message of self-love and the joy of music leads to an increase in visitors during the holiday season. “We know that we have lots of folks who come to the Cathedral for Christmas Eve,” she said.

St. John’s Cathedral expects to welcome close to 1,500 people across its worship services this year. These gatherings offer moments of peace, celebration, and beautiful music.
