OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents to take the steps needed to protect their homes from winter-related fires.

A report from the National Fire Protection Association says that over 50 percent of all home fires involve a heat source being too close to flammable materials like furniture and bedding.

The SFMO recommends the following winter weather fire safety tips:

Make sure heating equipment like furnaces, space heaters and fireplaces are properly maintained and kept at least three feet from flammable materials.Turn off heaters when leaving the room or heading to bed.If a portable generator is needed during an outage, use it outside and at least 20 feet from windows and doors. Never run a generator inside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors by testing them monthly. Change their batteries at least once a year and replace ones that are over 10 years old.Prepare for outages with flashlights, extra batteries and a battery-powered radio. Keep blankets and warm clothing available and avoid candles to reduce fire risk.Have a fire escape plan in place. Practice the plan regularly and establish a safe meeting place outside.
