String of brush fires burn throughout greater Spokane area

SPOKANE, Wash. – A string of fires burned throughout the Spokane area Monday.

The largest fire was in the Dishman Hills and caused evacuations

It was one of several brush fires with which the Spokane Valley Fire Department had to contend on Labor Day. Two fires started off eastbound I-90, one at around 3 p.m. and

Firefighters from the City of Spokane also had to handle three brush fires on or near I-90, with one sparking near the same time as the 3 p.m. Valley brush fire and the other two starting within five minutes of each other in the East Central District near 6:30 p.m.

Two car fires also turned into brush fires in the hot, dry conditions.

A car crash on North Madison Road engulfed a vehicle in flames at around 10:30 a.m., killing the passenger and causing a small wildfire that required the assistance of WA Department of Natural Resources crews to extinguish.

In Airway Heights, a car was subsumed by flames at 8 p.m., which firefighters quickly extinguished before it could grow into a larger brush fire.

Overall, it was a remarkably busy day for emergency responders throughout the greater Spokane area, with several fires sparking within just minutes of each other throughout the evening.
