-Updated on Oct. 6, 2024, at 3:01 p.m.- CHENEY, Wash. — A SWAT standoff led to the arrest of a man who broke into the home of a victim, violating a Domestic Violence Order of Protection against him in Cheney.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), deputies received a call on Oct. 5 around 1:15 p.m. from a woman saying that a man had violated a Domestic Violence Order of Protection and was at her house on State Highway 904 west of Cheney.
Deputies and Cheney Police Officers responded to the call. They found out the 47-year-old male suspect had broken into the woman’s house and approached her outside when she got home. Fearing for her safety, she left the house and called law enforcement.
According to SCSO, the man had texted her multiple times over the last couple of days; the suspect violated the court order, which prohibited the suspect from contacting the woman or going within 1000 feet of her house.
It was later discovered “he had been drinking bourbon all day and that he knew about the protection order but “‘didn’t care,’” said SCSO.
According to SCSO, the man refused to leave the house despite officers and deputies advising him to surrender. SWAT, Crisis Negotiators, K9 Units, Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operators, and additional assets were called to assist the scene. Negotiators tried to coax the suspect out of the house, and even with a valid search warrant, the suspect still refused to comply with law enforcement.
The standoff lasted four hours before the suspect came outside, still uncooperative. According to SCSO, law enforcement warned that they would use force if he did not cooperate. The suspect remained defiant, and a K9 was deployed to take him into custody.
The suspect was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Violation of a Domestic Violence Protection Order and Residential Burglary.
