Tampa Bay man refuses to leave boat as storm surge approaches

TAMPA BAY, Fla. – Experts estimate that nearly half a million homes in Tampa and Sarasota are at risk from the massive storm surge expected from Storm Milton. The surge could be double that of recent Storm Helene. While most residents are evacuating, a few have chosen to stay.

Joseph Malinowski, known locally as Lieutenant Dan, plans to ride out the storm on his 20-foot sailboat tied to the dock in downtown Tampa Bay. He has no intention of leaving despite the deadly storm surge.

“I believe in my heart that God wants me to stay out here until this is all over,” Malinowski said.

Malinowski, who is known for his resilience, lost his leg at 16 in a scooter accident. He has also survived cancer, an opioid addiction, and Helene on his boat less than two weeks ago. He remains confident he will also weather Storm Milton.

The storm surge at Lieutenant Dan’s location is expected to reach about 8 to 12 feet.
