SPOKANE, Wash., – 18-year-old Coryne Canova pleaded guilty to second degree assault in Spokane County Juvenile Court on Tuesday after stabbing a woman in the bathroom of Shadle Park High School in February.

Canova will be sentenced to 15 to 36 weeks in a facility run by the Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration (JRA). The JRA will determine how long her sentence will be and if time already served will count towards the sentence.

The incident back in February started when a student witness told police she saw Canova kick another student in the head multiple times, and then the victim tried to intervene. Court documents say this led to a fight between Canova and the victim, in which the victim was stabbed in the chest and in the arm. Kathryn Bridges, the mother of the victim, said that today felt like a loss and a victory. “Coryne walked in with her own mouth, said she was guilty of this crime. And we just want it to be known that we will not stop going for justice for all of these kids that are in highschool from here on out. Because something needs to be done about the bullying and mental health that’s going on,” Bridges said. Bridges said she is not trying to seek justice against just one person, but wants Spokane schools to recognize and prevent these actions from ever happening in the future.
