Terrific taters: Airway Heights potato pile highlights history of Inland Northwest spuds

SPOKANE, Wash. – A gigantic pile of potatoes is currently sitting in Airway Heights. It’s the perfect time to review the fascinating history of potatoes throughout the Inland Northwest.

In Idaho, potatoes are not just a snack to share with your best spuddies, but a major political issue.

The Idaho Potato Commission was founded in 1937 and has promoted potatoes from across the Gem State since that point. They generate about $2 billion for Idaho’s economy every year and are discussed by agricultural policy experts every legislative session.

Potatoes are also an important economic force in Washington. Washington State University (WSU) releases potato reports annually. WSU’s 2022 report found that the Evergreen State generated $2.36 billion in net potato exports that year.

The average American eats about 110 pounds of potatoes a year. It is unclear how many of those pounds are derived from large free potato piles.

If you happen to get your hands on some taters from the Airway Heights potato pile, NonStop Local KHQ has some ideas on how to use them.
