Two Spokane Tribe kids prepare to honor their families at Pow-Wow at the Falls

SPOKANE, Wash. – For weeks now, two local Spokane Tribe members, who are nine and ten years old, have been raising money to give back to the community during the Pow-Wow.

For just about every Pow Wow, the Pow-Wow committee selects the head staff (one man, one woman, one boy, and one girl) who then oversee different elements of the Pow Wow.

This is the first time that Moq Abramson (9) and Melody Waskahat (10) have received this incredible honor.

The committee selects those who are good members of the community to represent their families in this role.

Head staff not only oversee the Pow-Wow as a whole, but they also raise money for their own special, which is a dance competition with a group of people and a style of dance of their choosing. They pick out the judges, the prizes or amount of money that goes to the winners, and they do other things to help the Pow-Wow flow.

Both kids say they are happy but nervous about their first time as head staff. They want to represent their families well and give back to the community. They are looking forward to their specials this weekend.
