Moscow, IDAHO — A University of Idaho student is headed to Japan after he was awarded the David L. Boren Scholarship.
Shane Neirinckx, of Coeur d’Alene, received the honor, which the National Security Education Program sponsors. The David L. Boren Scholarship is a $25,000 scholarship that provides funding to study less commonly taught languages in world regions, including those underrepresented in study abroad.
Through this program, Neirinckx will complete a University Studies Abroad Consortium study abroad program at Hiroshima University in Japan, taking Japanese language and culture classes.
Neirinckx started at U of I in Fall 2022. He also received the Dean’s Endowed Award from the College of Letters and Arts and Social Sciences, which allowed him to travel to Hiroshima. There, U of I said he researched the history of the post-World War II relationship between U of I and Hiroshima University.
“Through long-term overseas study, Boren scholars learn to communicate across cultures and analyze economic, political, religious and societal events from local, national and global perspectives,” U of I said.
