COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Vice President-elect JD Vance has resigned his seat in the U.S. Senate effective Friday. The move will trigger Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s closely watched appointment of a successor. Vance made his intentions known in a letter to DeWine on Thursday. Among contenders for his replacement is Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who recently accompanied the governor to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Other contenders include statewide officials, congressional representatives, former Senate candidates and political outsiders. Whomever DeWine appoints will serve until December 2026. They would need to run again for the remainder of the term in November 2026.
