RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Democrats have preserved their Statehouse majority in special elections. Voters in the northern and central parts of the state backed two Democrats to fill a vacancy in the Senate and an open seat in the House of Delegates. The special elections Tuesday were the first official races in Virginia since November’s general election. Senate Democrats had a narrow 20-18 majority, making the special elections key to the party’s efforts to preserve a majority in both chambers. Democrats in the House of Delegates had a 50-49 lead. Democratic Del. Kannan Srinivasan defeated Republican Tumay Harding and Democrat JJ Singh bested Republican Ram Venkatachalam.
