SPOKANE, Wash. — Last year, Volunteers of America (VOA) in Spokane received donations of over 25,000 individual hygiene products for their annual donation-drive, “Mardi Bra”. This year, they hope that number will be even higher.

VOA Spokane owns and operates 3 homeless shelters in the Spokane area. They work with veterans, foster youth, pregnant and parenting teens, homeless adults and more.

VOA Spokane’s hope is that your donations can bring dignity and comfort to those who they serve.

They are asking you to donate any of the following:

DeodorantPadsTamponsRazorsBrasUnderwearTravel-size shampoo and conditioners

VOA Spokane is accepting donations of both men’s and women’s products. The deadline for this year’s drive is March 1, but they are always accepting donations because there is always a need.

Donation boxes are all throughout Spokane, including every YMCA. More locations can be found here.

VOA Spokane is also looking for more volunteers at local shelters.

Primarily, they are looking for people willing to operate the front desk at their shelters. Volunteers must be 21+ for this position. They would be asked to help coordinate schedules and bring a smile to those who they serve.

VOA also needs volunteers to teach art and knitting classes. You could be teaching veterans, foster youth, pregnant parenting teens, or anyone else who VOA works with.

Rae-Lynn Barden with VOA Spokane says some volunteers mean everything to those who they serve.

“When we have volunteers come in consistently to teach them how to knit or teach them how to play chess, it’s a big deal to a young person,” said Barden.
