WARDEN, Wash. — A baby from Warden is safe and reunited with their family, while a woman is in custody after allegedly stealing a car with the child inside and later stealing a police car.
According to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Warden Police received a report around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday about a stolen vehicle from an address on Main Street in Warden.
Police said that the caller reported that a 2-month-old baby was inside the car. Warden Police utilized traffic cameras to track the vehicle as it left Warden, heading north on Road U Southeast.
Deputies said that 15 minutes later, and 12 miles away, another caller reported a car driving erratically near Road 3 Northeast and Road S Northeast in rural Moses Lake. Deputies said that the car matched the description of the stolen car. A deputy responding to the original report found the stolen car stopped in the middle of Road 3 Northeast, between Road S Northeast and Road T Northeast. The deputy took the suspect into custody, and the child was unharmed and reunited with their family.
Deputies said that they handcuffed the suspect and placed her in the back of a Warden police car. However, a short time later, the suspect managed to crawl from the back seat to the front and drove away. The patrol car was stopped about half a mile away when two sheriff’s deputies used their patrol cars to pin the stolen police car. The suspect was arrested again. Deputies said that the suspect was possibly under the influence of an unknown substance, she was transported by ambulance to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Grant County Sheriff’s Office officials reported that a deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident, and three law enforcement vehicles were damaged.
Deputies said that the suspect’s name will be released once she is booked into the Grant County Jail. She faces charges including kidnapping, DUI and theft of a motor vehicle.
