Washington bill could change neighborhood business zoning

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington lawmakers are considering a bill that could impact small businesses like cafes and grocery stores in residential neighborhoods.

The bill, pre-filed in the state house by two Western Washington Democrats, aims to require cities and towns to allow such businesses in any zone. However, there is a stipulation that any business serving alcohol must also serve food.

Cities would retain some control over aspects such as the size of businesses and parking requirements.

This legislative move is part of a broader trend in urban areas across the United States, aiming to improve access to services without the need for driving. However, this trend has faced backlash in some communities, where residents view it as a potential threat to property values and living standards.

Spokane has been a leader in these efforts, having already removed parking minimums and single-family zoning before similar statewide actions were taken.

This bill reflects ongoing discussions about urban development and accessibility in Washington.
