Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife open comments on rabbit endangerment status

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is opening public comment on the status review of the pygmy rabbit.

The pygmy rabbit was declared extinct in Washington back in 2004, prompting the state to captive breed and translocate the rabbits.

Now the state has reintroduced the rabbits into the region after years of work. However, their work isn’t done yet.

Wildlife biologists are advocating for the rabbit to remain on the state’s endangered list because they have not reached sufficient population, distribution, or security.

The WDFW is asking for public comments on their findings and their suggestion to keep the rabbit on the endangered list on their website and via email here.

Following the public comment period, WDFW will finalize the status review and meet in the fall of 2024 to discuss the decision.
