Washington Department of Natural Resources implements burn ban amid wildfires

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is implementing a burn ban in response to multiple wildfires across the state.

The ban which starts on Wednesday, July 10, prohibits outdoor burning, campfires, charcoal briquettes and prescribed burns on all forest lands protected by DNR through September 30. Depending on fire conditions, this timeframe may be adjusted.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz emphasized, “The record-breaking temperatures we are experiencing this week have left our state bone dry. I urge everyone in Washington to help protect our firefighters and communities this summer. Please refrain from starting fires outdoors and stay vigilant when outdoors.”

DNR said the restriction is crucial for reducing potential wildfire ignition sources amid persistently high fire dangers.

Officials advise the public to stay prepared during fire season by remaining alert to rapid environmental changes, checking current restrictions and conditions before heading out, ensuring secure tow chains that do not drag on the pavement, and sticking to established trails.

Residents who spot smoke are urged to call 911 to report fires. For more information on staying safe during fire season, visit https://www.dnr.wa.gov/WildfirePrevention. Wildfire statistics are available on DNR’s Fire Dashboard at http://fireinfo.dnr.wa.gov/.
