OLYMPIA, Wash. — Several Washington lawmakers have responded to the apparent assassination attempt on Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Patty Murray, a Democrat and U.S. Senator from Washington, who also serves as president pro tempore of the United States Senate, stated in a recent post:
“Violence is never acceptable, regardless of political beliefs. In a democracy, we use our voices and our votes—violence has no place in America.”
Governor of Washington State Jay Inslee responded to the shooting with the following remarks:
“Violence should never be a part of politics. I hope those responsible for today’s attack are swiftly brought to justice. Our thoughts are with everyone at the event, and I echo the gratitude for the Secret Service and first responders.”
Tiffany Smiley, a Republican candidate for Washington’s 4th Congressional District, released this statement on the shooting:
“Today, our prayers are with President Trump, the victims, and their families. The President demonstrated exceptional courage, and I’m thankful that God protected him. President Trump’s work for our country is unfinished, and I eagerly anticipate his presidency as the 47th President of the United States in November. Let us stand united in our great nation without fear.”
Spokane County Treasurer and candidate to represent Washington’s 5th Congressional District Michael Baumgartner said that the attempted assassination of presidential candidate Trump was “dark day for our country.”
He continued to condemn the assassination attempt, saying that “It is important for all elected officials of each political party to say – as clearly and loudly as possible – there is no place for violence in American politics. It is never justified. No one deserves it. It is a cowardly crime.”
