OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington lawmakers are preparing for the 2025 legislative session, which begins Monday at the state capitol in Olympia. Multiple bills are already on the table, and experts are eager to see how the session unfolds.
Jerry Cornfield from the Washington Standard shared his insights into what might be expected from lawmakers in the coming months. Cornfield, who has monitored Washington legislation for two decades, said he is intrigued to see what happens.
“Lots of dynamics will be different than past years because they have so many new folks in the place,” Cornfield said.
The state legislature, which has several new faces this year, will send bills to a new governor.
Governor-elect Bob Ferguson (D) says he will prioritize public safety and reducing unnecessary spending in the first few months of his tenure as the leader of the Evergreen State.
Hiring more police, free student meals and new driving laws will likely be up for discussion in January as policymakers gather in the state capitol.
