GRANT COUNTY, Wash. – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is taking steps to study the endangered Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits.
Researchers plan to use drones to observe the rabbits’ habitats, focusing on areas in Grant and Douglas counties, including private lands.
The pygmy rabbits are listed as endangered and are particularly at risk from climate change, according to the department.
The study aims to find ways to help repopulate the species by observing their habitats and estimating their population.
The drone flights are scheduled to take place from December 2024 to October 2026.
