OLYMPIA — Washington residents and state employees are being asked to help those affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California.
According to a press release from the Secretary of State Office, the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia and Sunset fires have forced nearly 180,000 people to evacuate their homes. The Palisades Fire alone has destroyed more than 1,000 buildings and burned nearly 27 square miles. At least five people have died, and fire crews are still working to contain the flames, according to AP News.
The Secretary of State’s office said that they are directing people to the Disaster Relief Center (DRC), which connects donors with verified crisis-relief charities. The DRC is part of the state’s Combined Fund Drive (CFD), which allows residents to send donations during large-scale disasters.
“When disaster strikes, I am proud of how Washington citizens and state employees rise up to support those in need,” Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said. “The Combined Fund Drive is an option for those who want to come to the financial aid of others in a reliable and secure way.”
State employees and retirees can donate through a one-time gift or set up monthly payroll deductions through the CFD. Donations can be directed to specific charities helping with wildfire relief efforts.
