Washington state expands protections for adult entertainment workers in 2025

TUMWATER, Wash. – Adult entertainers can expect to keep more of their wages and have a safer work environment after the Department of Labor and Industries released new laws for 2025.

The new laws will take effect Jan. 2, 2025, and will aim to expands safety requirements and financial protections.

Some of the laws include:

Protection systems – Panic buttons in bathrooms, secure dressing rooms, keypad entriesImproved security – Security guards during operating hoursBlocking problematic customers – Banning customers who have committed prostitution, sex trafficking and other violent actsTraining employees – Training employees to support entertainers in times of conflictEliminate unfair pay systems – Remove systems that held adult entertainers responsible for most of the club’s fees.Improved complaint process – Complaints fully investigated

The new laws come after Washington Labor and Industries held meetings and public hearings where they heard from adult entertainers’ perspective and input.

“Like any other worker in the state, adult entertainers deserve job-site safety and protection from unfair labor practices,” said Celeste Monahan, L&I assistant director for Fraud Prevention and Labor Standards. “These new rules make sure safety and a level playing field are the standard.”
