OLYMPIA, Wash. – After the school shooting in Georgia, Washington State Superintendent Chris Reykdal expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims and their families.

Reykdal emphasized that schools are intended to be safe havens where students can learn and grow, and it is heartbreaking when such violence disrupts this environment.

Reykdal highlighted Washington state’s efforts to address gun violence, noting that the state ranks ninth for the strength of its gun safety laws, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. Recent legislative measures in Washington include mandatory background checks for all gun sales, temporary restrictions on gun access for individuals at extreme risk, a ban on assault weapons, and a prohibition on firearms at public demonstrations. Additionally, the state has instituted age restrictions for gun purchases and mandatory waiting periods.

In terms of school safety, Reykdal pointed out that Washington requires each school to have a threat assessment and comprehensive safety plan. The state has also increased funding for mental health support in schools and expanded training requirements for safety staff.

Despite these measures, Reykdal acknowledged that tragedies can still occur and emphasized the need for more comprehensive national gun legislation. He argued that effective gun laws are essential for reducing gun violence and ensuring the safety of communities and schools across the country.
