‘We gave out cards and cookies and hugs’: Preschoolers shower seniors with Valentine’s Day love

Spokane Valley, WA. – As Valentine’s Day approaches, preschoolers with Hillyard’s Northeast Youth Center (NEYC) show that you’re never too young to spread love.

On Thursday, four-year-old Charlotte was among NEYC children who made a special delivery to our elderly neighbors living in the Brighton Court Assisted Living in Spokane Valley.

“We gave out cards and cookies and hugs,” Charlotte said.

It was the sweetest holiday treat for people at Brighton like Jean Norton, who recently celebrated her 101st birthday.

“I think it teaches all of us what Valentine’s Day is supposed to be,” Jean said. “They’re just so sweet.”

“They were smiling and they were like ‘you’re a sweetheart,’ and I said ‘that’s why I came here,’ Charlotte added.

More children with NEYC will be returning to Brighton next Wednesday to celebrate Valentine’s Day with these acts of love, and spread love through cards, cookies, even songs. Dick Wende lit up as he was handed his custom-made valentine this week.

“I used to be a schoolteacher, and seeing kids again is really fun and enjoyable and the cards they make is that much more great,” Dick said.

NEYC hopes these efforts inspire others to take the time to spread love and possibly brighten a stranger’s day with just a few words on a card.

If you’d like to send a card to someone living at Brighton Court Assisted Living, that address is:

Seniors certainly appreciate that sense of support and love, and so do our troops serving our country overseas.

We hope this coverage warms your heart, too, and inspires you to spread more love this Valentine’s Day.
